| 3rd conference of the International Working Group on Legume and Vegetable Viruses |
 | When: | Wed 20 Aug 2008 - Sat 23 Aug 2008 |
 | Location: | Ljubljana, Slovenia
 | | Organiser: | International Working Group on Legume and Vegetable Viruses - Slovenian National Institute of Biology |
 | Website: | http://www.iwglvv.si/ |
 | Paper/abstract deadline: | Mon 31 Mar 2008 |
 | The diversity and wide host range of legume and vegetable viruses constitute a continuous threat to the crop industry. In addition, mixed infections with other pathogens like viroids and phytoplasmas are often observed. Natural genetic variability of viruses and recombination events between distinct viruses contribute to development of new virus variants. Those often have new properties; infecting new hosts in new environments and causing more severe symptoms. New virus variants represent a challenge for virus disease management, vector management, plant breeding and plant-virus interaction studies. To achieve control over the diseases, constant development of sensitive, reliable and validated detection methods is needed.
With your contributions the organising committee would like to cover all these aspects in the conference programme. The conference will be invigorated by the traditional technical excursion to the Slovenian Karst region. |

 | Interdisciplinary research between the fields of ecological and molecular plant physiology is rapidly revealing a spectacular flexibility and sophistication in the adaptations of plants to their biotic and abiotic environment. We have invited various top scientists that have contributed to this research and asked them to present their work in a manner that provides non-expert scientists with insight into the latest developments.
The choice of speakers reflects the interdisciplinarity of the field. Three topics receive particular attention:
1) Induced resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors
2) Mutualistic and symbiotic interactions between plants, insects and micro-organisms
3) Interactions between plants and light Besides presentations there will be round table discussions supported by key publications on specific topics. Students will also be offered an opportunity to present their own work and will be given ample of opportunity to consult and discuss with the experts. By bringing together students from different research groups and disciplines we envision to stimulate exchange of information and novel collaborations. |

 | In recent years there has been a great expansion of knowledge of genes that influence the regulatory pathways that control organismal properties of adaptive and economic importance, such as vegetative architecture; flowering and fruit characteristics; and tolerance of stresses. The genes identified have encoded a wide variety of functions, including transcription factors; hormones, metabolic enzymes, receptors, and signal transduction factors; regulatory and translocated RNAs; ion transport and homeostasis; and regulators of epigenesis. The goal of this meeting is to discuss this rapidly moving body of knowledge with an eye to future translation, i.e., how the knowledge might be used to create major advances in breeding, biotechnology, and genetic engineering. |

| Applied Aspects of Aerobiology |
 | When: | Wed 19 Nov 2008 - Wed 19 Nov 2008 |
 | Location: | Rothamsted Research, Harpenden, UK
 | | Organiser: | Association of Applied Biologists |
 | Website: | http://www.aab.org.uk/contentok.php?id=66&basket=wwsshowconfdets |
 | Paper/abstract deadline: | Tue 1 Jul 2008 |
 | Aerobiology is a study of biological particles present in both outdoor and indoor air and has lead to important scientific advancements in understanding the dispersal, distribution and impact of human, animal and plant pathogens and allergens. Recently interest in the dispersal of microbes, and other plant and animal material by wind has increased to improve our understanding of biodiversity, ecology and the impact of climate change. Aerobiology is multidisciplinary, requiring an understanding of physics, which explains the movement of air and particles suspended in it, as well as biological processes affecting the production of particles or their effects. Various air sampling methods are available that can now be integrated with increasingly sophisticated diagnostic techniques. Immunological and molecular methods are providing answers as they allow quantification of particles that may not previously have been identified accurately and can even provide information at the sub-species level (antibiotic or pesticide resistance, race structure, etc). |

| International Conference on Genetic control of plant pathogenic viruses and their vectors: towards new resistance strategies |
 | When: | Sun 23 Nov 2008 - Thu 27 Nov 2008 |
 | Location: | Puerto de Santa María, Spain
 | | Website: | http://www.richalia.es/congreso/index.html |
 | Paper/abstract deadline: | Sat 31 May 2008 |
 | Plant viruses and their vectors cause serious economic losses, limit worldwide crop production, and have negative effects on the quality and safety of food. The use of genetic resistance is one of the best ways to control plant viruses and their vectors. ResistVir (http://www.resistvir-db.org) is a Coordination Action funded by the 6th EU Framework Program which aims at improving co-ordination of research on genetic resistance to plant pathogenic viruses and vectors in European crops. ResistVir is now organizing an International Congress dedicated to current research activities on genetic resistances to plant pathogenic viruses and their vectors. It will make accessible to stakeholders an actualised view of the state-of-the-art on the issue, while providing updated information on the latest research and developments carried out in the field.
The meeting will cover aspects related to (i) important/emergent plant virus diseases, (ii) factors required for virus multiplication and spread, (iii) plant responses to viruses and/or their vectors, (iv) new approaches to control plant viruses and their vectors, (v) resistance durability, and (vi) legal and technology transfer related issues. |
