Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC 2008) (24 Aug 2008)

University College Cork, Ireland
Sun 24 Aug 2008 - Wed 27 Aug 2008
The theme of ABIC 2008 Cork is Agricultural Biotechnology for a competitive and sustainable future. At a time when global agricultural faces significant challenges, an in depth discussion of how ag biotech can influence the sustainability of global agriculture while maintaining competitiveness is both timely and necessary.
The goal of ABIC Cork 2008 is to provide a stimulating forum for delegates to network and discuss the ag-biotech topics most pertinent to their day to day experiences. As such the program committee has devised a conference format that will facilitate authoritative speakers to address a wide variety of issues across 12 parallel and 2 plenary sessions.

Plant Interactions with the Environment (3 Sep 2008)

University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland
Wed 3 Sep 2008 - Fri 5 Sep 2008
Interdisciplinary research between the fields of ecological and molecular plant physiology is rapidly revealing a spectacular flexibility and sophistication in the adaptations of plants to their biotic and abiotic environment. We have invited various top scientists that have contributed to this research and asked them to present their work in a manner that provides non-expert scientists with insight into the latest developments.
The choice of speakers reflects the interdisciplinarity of the field. Three topics receive particular attention:
1) Induced resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors
2) Mutualistic and symbiotic interactions between plants, insects and micro-organisms
3) Interactions between plants and light Besides presentations there will be round table discussions supported by key publications on specific topics. Students will also be offered an opportunity to present their own work and will be given ample of opportunity to consult and discuss with the experts. By bringing together students from different research groups and disciplines we envision to stimulate exchange of information and novel collaborations.

Resource Capture by Crops: Integrated Approaches (10 Sep 2008)

Nottingham, UK
Wed 10 Sep 2008 - Fri 12 Sep 2008
This conference will consider current and future methods of improving resource capture and utilisation by food and non-food crops. The main theme of the conference will be how resource capture and conversion may be improved by crop management and plant breeding including the application of advances in biotechnology. The impact of environmental goals on achieving optimal resource capture and modelling of resource capture will also be considered. The conference will additionally address the development of remote-sensing approaches such as infra-red thermometry, fluorescence or spectral reflectance to provide tools for rapid screening of ‘integrative’ physiological traits and for the diagnosis of environmental constraints. Within this theme, the scaling-up of leaf- and plant-scale observations to the canopy level will be considered.

Physiological Sculpture of Plants: new visions and capabilities for crop development (17 Sep 2008)

Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood, Oregon, USA
Wed 17 Sep 2008 - Sat 20 Sep 2008
In recent years there has been a great expansion of knowledge of genes that influence the regulatory pathways that control organismal properties of adaptive and economic importance, such as vegetative architecture; flowering and fruit characteristics; and tolerance of stresses. The genes identified have encoded a wide variety of functions, including transcription factors; hormones, metabolic enzymes, receptors, and signal transduction factors; regulatory and translocated RNAs; ion transport and homeostasis; and regulators of epigenesis. The goal of this meeting is to discuss this rapidly moving body of knowledge with an eye to future translation, i.e., how the knowledge might be used to create major advances in breeding, biotechnology, and genetic engineering.
